OnTV: The Weather Channel makes its debut on cable systems. Cagney and Lacey premiered on CBS. As did Family Ties, and Silver Spoons on NBC. Other TV premiers: Cheers, Remington Steele and St. Elsewhere.
 
 
In sports, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4 games to 3 in the World Series. San Francisco beats Cincinatti 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI.
 
Other happenings:
  • AT&T (a.k.a. Ma Bell) agrees to be broken up in an antitrust setlement. 
  • USA Today begins publication in September. With its brief stories and wide use of colorful charts, the paper is often referred to as "McPaper.
  • Coca-Cola introduces Diet Coke
  • President Ronald Reagan announces the war on drugs. The "Just Say No" program will be introduced a year later.
  • The compact disc (CD) is introduced by CBS/Sony and Philips.  The first commercial CD is "52nd Street" by Billy Joel.
  • The Toyota Camry is introduced.
