OnTV: Married...with Children premiers on Fox, The Simpsons appear as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. Full House introduces the world to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. thirtysomething debuts on ABC.
 
 
 In Washington D.C., Oliver North testifies in front of Congress about his involvement in the "Iran-Contra" affairDonna Rice is observed going into the townhouse of Senator and Presidential hopeful Gary Hart. She spends the night. Alan Greenspan is confirmed by the Senate as chairman of the Federal Reserve. 
 
On Wall Street: the Dow Jones Industrial Average crosses 2000 for the first time in January. On October 19th the Dow falls 508 points, or 22.6%.

  • PTL minister Jim Bakker resigns following revelations that he cheated on his wife, Tammy Faye, with church-secretary Jessica Hahn
  • America Online (AOL) begins using that name. 
  • Snapple introduces ready-to-drink iced tea.
  • Prozac makes its debut in the United States.
  • Mike Tyson wins the World Boxing Association heavyweight title. 
  • Football: the New York Giants beat Denver 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI. The Players Association will go on strike September 22 and will return to work October 15 without a new accord.
  • Baseball: Minnesota Twins defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3 to win the World Series.
