 In world history, the Berlin Wall is dismantled. Manuel Noriega refuses to acknolwedge the results of free elections, leading to an American invasion and his subsequent arrest.

  • Dilbert debuts in U.S. newspapers detailing the horros of "cubicle culture." 
  • Iran offers $3 million for the death of Salman Rushdie after he publishes "The Satanic Verses." 
  • Nintendo introduces the Game Boy hand-held video game.
  • Serial killer Ted Bundy dies in a Florida electric chair.
  • The tanker Exxon Valdez runs aground, releasing 240,000 barrels of oil in Prince William Sound. 
  • Football:  San Francisco defeats Cincinatti 20-16 in
    Super Bowl XXIII
  • Baseball:  Oakland beat San Francisco 4 games to 0 in the World Series. An earthquake causes an 11-day postponement of Game 3.
